Functional Orthodontics: The Best Option for a Straighter Smile

woman with straight, beautiful teethIf you cringe when you see your crooked teeth in the mirror, you’re not alone. Countless individuals, including children and adults of all ages, suffer from orthodontic problems. However, these issues aren’t just a cosmetic concern; they can lead to painful and serious oral and overall health conditions. Let’s talk more about why it is so important to have a straight, well-aligned smile and how you can achieve that goal through functional orthodontics.

The Problems With Misalignment

Orthodontic problems, such as crooked teeth, overcrowding, and malocclusion (bad bite), may lead to any of the following conditions:

  • TMJ disorder (TMD). The temporomandibular joints connect the lower jaw to the rest of the skull. A misaligned bite can place extra stress on the TMJs, leading to a long list of serious symptoms, including headaches, severe jaw pain, and even hearing loss.
  • Sleep apnea. Sleep apnea, a condition wherein a person temporarily stops breathing multiple times a night, is caused when soft tissues block the airway. A mispositioned jaw or overcrowded teeth may contribute to the airway blockage by not allowing your tongue and palate the room they need to rest properly while you’re asleep.
  • The risk of tooth damage. When you bite down, your teeth should fit comfortably together. However, if some of the teeth are not in their proper places, they may hit one another at odd angles, increasing the risk of cracks, chips, and premature wear and tear.
  • Oral hygiene problems. It can be difficult to thoroughly clean between crooked teeth, an issue that increases the risk of tooth decay.

Correcting Orthodontic Problems

Many orthodontic treatments, including traditional braces and Invisalign, work by applying gentle pressure to the teeth over an extended period of time. They offer a very effective method for repositioning teeth and fixing bite problems. However, they always work within the existing bone structure; they may require that a dentist performs extractions, and they don’t always correct problems with jaw positioning.

Holistic dentistry offers a better solution to misalignment issues: functional orthodontics. It can actually reshape the bones in and around the mouth, even repositioning the jaw and creating more room for overcrowded teeth. It does so via removable orthodontic appliances, which your dentist designs just for you. Functional orthodontics may work alongside traditional treatments, like Invisalign or regular metal braces, to produce a beautiful, healthy smile.

To discover which teeth-straightening method is right for you, schedule a consultation with a holistic dentist. After taking some X-rays and performing a thorough visual examination of your mouth, they’ll talk to you about your treatment options and your smile’s long-term outlook. Hopefully, you have a straighter, healthier jaw and teeth in your near future!
